Due the negative effects plastic bags have had on our environment and continuing with our Give Green initiative, Luv2Pak Australia had to look for an environmentally friendly carry bag. The bag had to be made from biodegradable material and would completely break down with not only a limited effect, but also a positive effect on the environment. So we found Biodegradable plastic or Cornstarch bags. Biodegradable plastic bags are made from cornstarch, which is harvested with dramatically less of an impact on the environment than most materials used in packaging. Cornstarch is also a renewable and sustainable material.

Our biodegradable plastic bags are made from all natural materials and are a renewable resource, which will break down, back into environmentally friendly organic rich compost. During the break down process, the biodegradable plastic bags will contribute water and carbon dioxide back into the environment, with the end product being able to be used as compost. The compost will then in turn increase the soil organic content as well as water and nutrient retention of the soil, and in doing so will suppress plant disease.

The bags have a shelf life of 12 months, and need to be stored in a controlled environment, away from heat and moisture. Once the Biodegradable plastic bags have been used and are ready to be discarded, we recommend they be disposed of in compost bins, where they have the ultimate conditions to break down. Biodegradable bags cannot be put into recycling bins, as they are not suitable to be recycled. It can take anywhere from 1-6 months for the bags to completely break down, this is depending on the environmental conditions and the thickness of the cornstarch material. The bags will fully biodegrade if it is accidentally disposed of into the soil, a lake, the sea or a sewage treatment plant, as biodegradation occurs when broken down by micro-organisms which exist naturally in these environments. As there is no toxic residue in the material it is completely safe to be broken down in these environments without having an impact on the environment.

Luv2Pak's Biodegradable plastic bags are certified AS4736 and meet Australian standards to be biodegradable and compostable. They can be used in South Australia, and all other states around Australia, and are excluded from the plastic bag levy being trialed by the Victorian government.

Biodegradable plastic bags can be made into similar styles as normal plastic bags such as Die cut handles, Singlet bags, and soft loop handle bags. We can incorporate gussets to give the bags extra room, or even turn over tops to provide the bags with extra strength. Currently we are only able to print PMS colours on the bags as printing technology is still developing. Minimums vary depending on the style of bags and lead-time is approximately 12 weeks.
